TRIO Student Support Services Grant Application

What is TRIO Student Support Services?

The Student Support Services (SSS) program provides support services to low-income students, first-generation college students, and disabled students enrolled in post-secondary education programs.

SSS funding is positioned to support eligible students to receive critical supplemental learning support that can include academic career counselling, career guidance, instruction, mentoring, and tutoring. The goal of the SSS funding program is to help colleges increase the retention and graduation rates of students making the transition from high school to higher education.

What Type Of Student Is Eligible For TRIO Student Support Services?

To be eligible to submit an application to access this benefit program, your program must be focused on supporting current or prospective students pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree AND must be identified as coming from one of the following categories:

  • Low income
  • First-generation college student
  • Disabled

Types of projects that TRIO grants get approved

As per the guidelines published by U.S. Department of Education, all SSS projects must provide:

Academic tutoring, which may include instruction in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics, science, and other subjects; advice and assistance in postsecondary course selection; assist students with information on the full range of student financial aid programs, benefits and resources for locating public and private scholarships; and assistance in completing financial aid applications.

Education or counselling services designed to improve financial and economic literacy and assist students in applying for admission to graduate and professional programs; and assist students enrolled in two-­year institutions and applying for admission to and obtaining financial assistance for enrollment in four­-year programs.

The SSS projects may also provide individualized counselling for personal, career, and academic information, activities, and instruction designed to acquaint students with career options; exposure to cultural events and academic programs not usually available; mentoring programs, securing temporary housing during breaks for students who are homeless youths and students who are in foster care or are aging out of the foster care system.
