Active Learning

What is active learning?

A new approach to learning that is gaining traction in higher education is called active learning. Active learning principles are based on the idea that students will learn more when they are engaged with their instructor and peers, rather than sitting through a lecture or listening to an audio recording. Active learning has many benefits including improved student understanding, better retention of information, increased motivation to learn, and higher rates of success.

Active learning can be applied to any discipline in higher education, but it is most often used in math, science, humanities, and social sciences. Active learning can take many forms including: collaborative projects, debates and discussions, or group work that requires students to work together and share their contributions. The goal for this type of education is not to simply transmit knowledge from one person to another but to encourage deeper thinking, curiosity, and critical thinking skills.

Active Learning Benefits:

  • Easier to reach all types of learners
  • Helps students develop higher level thinking skills
  • Deepens understanding of material
  • Encourages collaboration between peers
  • Promotes social interaction and well-being.
