KPU | Faculty Engagement Drives Online Tutoring Platform Success

KPU partners with QuadC to drive success in online tutoring, benefiting both students and faculty. Discover how this collaboration enhances student success.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) in British Columbia has provided students with the skills needed for their future careers for more than 30 years. KPU delivers more than 120 programs across seven distinct faculties – Academic and Career Advancement, Arts, Business, Design, Health, Science and Horticulture, and Trades and Technology. Students pursue degrees, diplomas, certificates, and citations and work toward completing apprenticeships. Student Development is responsible for meeting the wide range of additional learning needs required by its diverse population of 20,000 students.

Results

  • 50% of sessions online
  • 5x increase in online sessions
  • 5 campuses
  • 45 active tutors

Challenges

  • Strict privacy legislation at national and provincial levels
  • Lack of central overview to give management data-driven insights
  • No online classroom capability

Solution

KPU’s leadership team chose to partner with QuadC. As well as allowing them to operate their entire tutor program through this online platform, KPU can be confident of their compliance with two sets of privacy legislation.

Strict national privacy rules, together with British Columbia’s regulations, limit how much information can be gathered, as well as its encryption and security needs. Because QuadC is based in Canada, they recognize these needs – ensuring KPU complies with legislation.

Through the platform, students may book and attend sessions in person, as well as connect with tutors and fellow students online.

Alongside one-on-one sessions, groups of up to six students are now able to attend sessions in online classrooms, thanks to faculty engagement with the platform. Curious about seeing the opportunities offered in its whiteboard area, some members of KPU faculty have taken ownership to ensure it meets their precise needs.

While half of the students have returned to tutoring in a face-to-face environment, students needing time with tutoring strategists have continued to attend appointments online.

“Our strategists work with students who have a general understanding of their subject but struggle to apply it,” explains Lyn Benn, KPU Director of Student Development. “Its heavy use says a lot about the system. The platform has accommodated all of our students who need tutoring… and then some!”

Students are benefitting from this ability to connect online with tutors, but so are the faculty, according to Lyn.

She explains: “Faculty have found the platform helpful as it allows our tutor navigators to feedback on assignments where students are experiencing problems.

“This has built a nice relationship between tutors and faculty – giving both a greater appreciation of who they are and what they do.”
